NEW CO-OPERATOR SCHOLARSHIP TO SUPPORT YOUNG MANITOBA JOURNALISTS

The Manitoba Co-operator, Manitoba's farm and country newspaper, has announced it will provide a $1,000 scholarship to a Manitoba resident enrolled full time or part time in his or her first or subsequent year of a post-secondary program in journalism, communications or broadcasting anywhere in Canada.

"We feel strongly that part of the Co-operator's role in Manitoba should be to encourage the development of the next generation of journalists, broadcasters and professional communicators - especially those who show a particular strength in bringing rural issues to the forefront," said Co-operator editor Jay Whetter.

The successful applicant will be selected by the Co-operator's editorial staff based strictly on the strength of his or her original, submitted essay of no more than 1,250 words on one of three pre-determined topics of importance to rural Manitoba.

ESSAY TOPICS

1. Do government controls on agricultural commodity production (choose either foreign or domestic) have a direct impact on your daily life? If so, which ones - and how?

2. Other than insurance and stabilization programs such as CAIS, what should Manitoba farmers do to insure themselves against disastrous drops in income or production?

3. Should there be increased public (federal and/or provincial) investment to sustain or improve small communities in rural Manitoba? Why or why not?
